Production Company of the Year: Riff Raff returns

One of the joys of Cresta Awards 2024 is to simply watch through a range of great film-craft. Just sit back and indulge in the pleasure of some terrific ideas, writing, performances and craft skills, along with some substantial budgets being brilliantly disposed of.

But while there are many kinds of winning work, the ultimate win is to sit on top of the heap as Production Company of the Year. It’s one that is worth its weight in Golds, so to speak… given it marks out the company, and its directors, as always to be in consideration for the next big scripts.
This year the top performance overall from any film house once again came down to a knock-out show from Riff Raff, the London-based production company.

It’s won before but last year Soldats of Paris nipped in and took the crown. Now Riff Raff are back, with a performance that centred around several pieces of work but held together by wins for ‘Snapper: A Perfect Tree’, the sentimental masterpiece for John Lewis & Partners, written by agency Saatchi & Saatchi.

It’s a prestige account and a lot of pressure was on this key Christmas film, the John Lewis ad being an iconic British institution. In Snapper a great tradition was nurtured and taken forward carefully but also with much creativity.

It won Gold trophies for both direction and use of music. With further scores coming in for the Rolling Stones video ‘Angry’ and the Smirnoff spot ‘We Do Atomic’, the Of The Year trophy was back in Riff Raff’s hands.
