Notes: | Parkinson’s is the fastest-growing neurological disorder in the world. It is an incurable, complex disease with more than 40 symptoms which always develop differently. The lack of awareness leads to stigma and isolation. To change this, it’s important that patients share their stories. Together with one of Europe’s largest university hospitals, Charité Berlin, we launched an art collection created by the first machine affected with a human disease: Printed by Parkinson’s. We asked six patients to name an object that became difficult to use due to Parkinson’s. Objects that stood for a hobby or activity they had a strong connection with. Then we recorded the patient's kinetic and neurological data to create 6 unique data sets. Each art object was printed while the printer was affected by their personal tremor – visualising the impact Parkinson's has on their daily lives. The art collection was launched on World Brain Day and exhibited in Berlin. Online, the stories educated people on the first signs, the progression and the latest treatments. The objects were presented at health conferences across Europe, reigniting a global debate on the importance of more understanding and research. Today, the collection is permanently exhibited at the Neurology Department of Charité, inspiring all patients to speak up and break the stigma, one story at a time. |
