Notes: | Our brand video highlights what keeps autocrats up at night: a free and independent press. The main goal of this short film is to present freedom of speech and freedom of opinion as universal rights that are necessary for independent media worldwide and therefore, a precondition for DW’s work. The autocrat as an adversary of a free press serves as a metaphor for autocratic/populistic tendencies in political discourse that are aimed at discrediting independent and/or critical reporting and thereby degrade the trust in the media. The short film isn’t directed at specific people or countries, but should help start a dialogue about this topic. The goal of the short film isn’t to topple autocrats. Nor are we suggesting that DW’s journalistic work is the only thing that puts them under pressure. We just wanted to take an unusual idea and an interesting film to raise awareness for this issue and sensitize people to the increasing threat to independent media. Music: Pushing the desperation and sleeplessness of the autocrat in the video, we’ve found the right musical atmosphere and matching style within the Great American Songbook era. Adding the right lyrics and a memorable voice took the whole spot to a new level. |
