Notes: For 285 million blind and visually impaired people worldwide, only 3% of all text content is available in braille. Because translation is so complex, it requires input by human experts, making it inaccessible for individuals and not profitable for publishers in most cases.

Existing braille translation software works by applying a small set of pre-defined rules.
Our approach is different: We use a machine learning based system. This is important, because due to the nature of Machine Learning and a feedback tool, usage increases the accuracy. The key was obtaining large amounts of training data and users. For data, we partnered with stakeholders and content owners, for users, we made our product free to use, challenging the existing software costing up to $700. The technology behind Dot Translate has been under development since 2015, alongside integration into Dot Watch. It was later integrated into Dot Mini in 2017 and released as a standalone product in 2019. Today it’s being used and further developed.

Dot Translate has so far translated over 20 million words and is supported by organizations like LVPEI, serving millions of blind and visually impaired people worldwide.
